Kenya · June 2022Pupils in a rural district learned on the ground under a tree, sharing a single textbook — until donors funded five classrooms and a library.
In this rural Kenyan district, 1,200 children crowded under acacia trees for lessons. Rain cancelled school for weeks; only one textbook existed for every ten pupils, and girls dropped out earliest. Enrollment was falling every single term.
A $120,000 grant paid for five new classrooms, desks and 1,200 sets of learning materials, built together with local masons. Parents fired the bricks, local masons led construction, and our team trained 14 teachers and stocked a lending library.
Enrollment rose by 45% within two years, and the first graduating class is now applying to colleges. Girls' attendance doubled, exam pass rates tripled, and the village council funds maintenance from its own budget.
"My daughter reads to me every evening now. The new school changed what our children believe is possible."
